FAMILY LIFE 'HAPPIER AND HEALTHIER WITH ROUTINE AND RITUAL'

Regular meals with the family could make you happier and healthier,
      scientists suggest.

US psychologists studying research on family routines and rituals found they
are associated with happy marriages and healthy children.

Routines such as regular bedtimes for children and household chores can even
help academic performance and health, researchers discovered.

A team at Syracuse University in New York studied research over the last 50
      years on the subject.

It found that children appeared to be healthier and better behaved during
infancy and pre-school when they had predictable routines.

Regular bedtimes help them get to sleep sooner and prevent them waking more
      in the night.

And routines carried out regularly in the household help shorten bouts of
respiratory infections in infants and promote the health of pre-school
      children.

But Dr Barbara Fiese, of Syracuse University says the amount of direct
influence routines and rituals has on making our lives better is up to
      future research.

Writing in the American Psychological Association's Journal of Family
Psychology, she said: "It is likely that competent parents are more
effective in creating family routines and that satisfying routines provide a
      sense of competence.

"It is also possible that families who are able to maintain routines and
rituals even in the face of divorce may be distinguishable by other
characteristics, such as lower levels of conflict, which can contribute to
      child adjustment."
