I saw this item on the Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Listserver concerning a
successful lawsuit by a doctor who was tired of being pushed around by the
requirements of managed care. Thought it might be of interest to many of
      you.

      Hi all,

A very important precedent setting verdict,
that should have been front page news IMHO, hasn't been discussed.

A San Diego AP story covered the suit brought by Dr. Thomas Self against
Children's Associated Medical Group (and president Dr. Iving Kaufman)
for firing Self "because he refused to compromise his quality of care in
order to save a buck." He was initially awarded $1.75 million. That was
the amount BEFORE the jury decided on punitive damages. "...managed
care opponents are calling (the verdict) a landmark victory for patient
care... Self's lawyers said he was repeatedly urged to spend less time
on patient visits and curtail tests and other treatment." Self refused
to allow them to dictate how he cared for his patients in order to make
      a profit.

Apparently the verdict isn't being appealed. This suit paves the way for
physicians to stop managed care organizations from essentially
practicing medicine without a license. Let's hope for some more news
      along these lines!!

      Joan
