Tallahassee Hummingbird Banding Jan 10-11
- Fred Bassett with the Hummer/Bird Study Group was in Tallahassee this weekend where he spoke to a full house at Native Nurseries. I went with him to 7 houses Saturday and he was able to band 4 new birds and had one return bird. Five birds came to the trap but refused to go in. On Sunday morning we went to 5 houses but only 2 birds showed up and just one was caught and banded.
We started in Killearn Lakes where there were three of the four birds seen in the yard were caught an banded. An immature male Rufous, an immature female Ruby-throated, and an adult female Rufous were caught and the other bird could not be identified. The adult female Rufous had been banded by Fred in 2002 as a second year bird, born in 2001. We went to Everett Lane in Betton Hills where an adult male Ruby-throated refused to go in the trap.
A couple of blocks from there on Harriman Circle where he had already banded two birds he added a female Rufous. Next on East Indianhead, where he had already banded three birds, he caught and banded a fourth bird, an adult female Rufous. After a trip to Westminster Oaks east of town, the bird did not show up. Way out north of town on Meridian Road, we watched for an hour as an adult female Ruby-throated and an adult female Rufous both buzzed the trap but refused to go in.
Back at my house on Piedmont Drive, we tried for an hour to catch a second adult female Rufous that came to the trap until 5:36 but never would go in. In the morning, she again teased us for 45 minutes before we moved on. On Muriel Court, Sunset Lane, and Ansley Park the birds did not show up. On McGuire Ave, where they have had male Rufouses the last two years, an immature male Black Chinned finally showed up and went in right into the trap.
Last year Fred banded 50 birds in Tallahassee, this year he has only banded 19. He may make one more trip through the area in February if enough birds show up. Why the big difference from last year is anyone's guess.
