Group Description

This group’s purpose is the preservation of history related to American pioneers of Scottish descent. A Long Street Reunion is held each year on the last Sunday of June. Participants are encouraged to bring a covered dish for a lunch held afterwards.

Long Street Presbyterian Church (1756-1923)

The Rev. Hugh McAden was the first Presbyterian minister known to have preached in the early Highland Scot community. By 1756, a small congregation started meeting at Alexander McKay's on Yadkin Road. The numbers grew. In October, 1758, the ruling elders of Long Street, Barbecue, and Bluff Churches requested that Rev. James Campbell preach for the three congregations. At that time, the Long Street elders included Malcolm Smith, Archibald Ray and Archibald McKay. Mr. Campbell continued to serve the three churches until 1776. Ministers that followed at Longstreet included: John McLeod, Dougald Crawford, Angus McDiarmid, Colin Lindsey, Colin McIver, Evander McNair, Neill McKay (great grandson of Alexander), James McQueen, David Fairley who served the church for more than forty years, and R.A. McLeod. The first six ministers were born in Scotland and all the others were of Scottish descent. In 1918 the federal government decided to take over this entire community along with other adjoining communities for the purpose of establishing an Artillery School of Fire.

Though the church ceased to exist as an active congregation upon the founding of Ft. Bragg military base, in the 1960s (if someone knows the exact year please inform me) largely through the efforts of Scott McFadyen, Sr. and Wilbur Clark, the annual Longstreet Presbyterian Church reunion was established to facilitate ongoing fellowship.
