RE: [new_distillers] new distiller with ?
>should I use s.o.s. pads for reflux or just leave my original design---- ?How tall is your 2" column ? (like from under the two 1/2" through tubes,
to the bottom of the 2" column) This height will determine how pure your
alcohol is. Yes - do pack this region with scrubbers - they will provide
the surface area for the refluxing liquid & rising vapour to mingle over &
hence improve the purity.
For an EXCELLENT book on making corn whisky, using a fractionating column,
see Ian Smiley's "Making pure corn whiskey - a professional guide for
amateur and micro distillers" from http://www.magma.ca/~smiley/main.htm
This has a lot more detail on making the various cuts etc then what I've
got. He shows how using a highly fractionating still (like the Nixon-Stone
one) can be used to better advantage than a pot still for making whisky,
due to its more precise nature in determining when to separate the heads,
middle and tail runs.
