re-using the wash (was) Re: turbo yeast
- Vector- i wasnt suggesting not collecting tails. if you have some %
left in the spent wash it may inhibit the new yeast growth. i think 1
or 2% wont be a problem. if it is higher it may kill the new yeast
which has to "get used" to the alcohol gradually. like why adding
yeast to a stuck fermentation wont work sometimes. BUT maybe a way
would be to start a new 1 gallon batch as normal a few days before
you distill this one. then dump it into the spent wash which you
already added sugar to, the brew should be more tolerant to % at this
Ken- there should be less bacteria in the spent wash than in new tap
water. i sometimes brew in my boiler and i would in this case. just
open the top dump in sugar while hot and a new turbo and water. the
only saving in money is on energy, the real saving is time & effort.
Darryl- i never thought about acidity. i think it may have to be
altered maybe with baking soda. i think you are talking about using
the wash with just new sugar & yeast, i am thinking of putting a new
turbo packet in. there will be a finite number of times to do it. i
would say twice is the max but thats just an uneducated guess!
i got this idea after reading a guy on the brewhaus forums
considering using a spent rum wash again, just dumping in sugar and
brewing it again to get more rum. he was really just after another
rum wash rather than convenience.
