Why a needle valve (about $66) to collect the alcohol. Why not a ball valve (about $15)? ... or any kind of tap? Bob Bourne.

a gate valve may give you more control over flow than a ball valve if
        they are easier to find.

For fine adjustment! Using the offset or Nixon stone head or with Bokakob’s designs the spirit is usually collected at one drop at a time. If you can get a normal tap to do that then it needs a new tap washer in it. Ten there is the tap washer in a normal tap what is it made from. Is the tap washer able to withstand the high temperature and levels of ethanol? Whereas the needle valve does not have anything inside it or if it does, it is usually a nitrile ‘O’ ring at the top of the shaft, not in the normal flow path.

Just a question of control Bob.  Needle valves enable reasonably precise control over small amounts of liquid, but ball valves do not.  A matter of how much control you have over a small gap with a given turn of the control.  On the other hand, Ball valves are good for vapor management ... with gate valves coming in a nose ahead ... as you are then dealing with larger volumes (vapor not liquid).

but I get it to work alright. The only needle valves that I could
find were the types used for camping gas bottles. It seems that is
what other people use but at the time I thought they might have
rubber washers in them. My gate valve has no rubber or plastic that
comes into contact with the alcohol whatsoever. Also, the gate valve
cost about $3, whereas the needle valve was about $15.

                            Bokabob,

I spent yesterday morning shopping for needle valves here in Victoria
Australia. The local plumbers don't have them, though one offered to get one
in - his best price $90!

There's a valve specialist shop in Sale, Gippland Valve and Fitting - around
                            $66.

I presume Bokabob that you're in America someplace - if ant one can tell me
where to get a needle valve in Oz for $2-3 US please do!

                            Regards,

                            Bob Bourne.

I spent yesterday morning shopping for needle valves here in Victoria Australia. The local plumbers don't have them, though one offered to get one in - his best price $90! There's a valve specialist shop in Sale, Gippland Valve and Fitting - around $66. I presume Bokabob that you're in America someplace - if ant one can tell me where to get a needle valve in Oz for $2-3 US please do! Regards, Bob Bourne.

Even in America most plumbing fittings are BSP, meaning British Standard Pipe. This uses an imperial thread, UNC, meaning Unified National Coarse (thread).

Even in America most plumbing fittings are BSP, meaning British
Standard Pipe. This uses an imperial thread, UNC, meaning Unified
National Coarse (thread). You get BSP in parallel thread, BSPP or a
tapered thread, BSPT. BSP is measured from the inside diameter of
the pipe, but the thread size is actually the thread on the outside
of the pipe. Thus a 3/8" BSP thread is actually about a 1/2" UNC
                                                  thread.

There are two other forms of piping threads as well, Metric and NPT.
I can't remember exactly which one gas threads are but I believe they
are a left hand BSPT threads. Left hand meaning it needs to be
turned the opposite direction. Metric tends to be used for
specialised applications so you will rarely see it. NPT is rarely
used because the threads don't seal as easily and have a lower thread
                                                  strength.

So any valves you send over should not be a problem unless they are
specialty items. Even then, adapters and fittings are readily
available. Fluidline are a good bunch in Australia to try for them.
They would probably be good for the valves too... Hhmmm...

                                                  Michael

Hi Bob, are we on the same page here, you are talking about a ¼” BSP Brass needle valve? Admittedly, I had to look around and ask at several plumbing stores of where I could find such a fitting. Head over to a store near the industrial area in town, mainly because ¼” BSP these days is mainly used on fridges and brake lines etc.

                                                    I purchased mine from

Give them a call and maybe they can put you onto someone in Melbourne that sells them too. Alternatively, they would mail one to you, from memory mine only cost me $5~10 Au whereas a SS one would have cost $45.

If you are after Stainless Steel fittings then try www.midwaymetals.com.au/ they have a branch in Dandenong, give them a ring to find a local source for all the Stainless Steel fittings you can imagine. If you have no success there then try Atlas metals.

Hi Bob, are we on the same page here, you are talking about a ¼" BSP
Brass needle valve? Admittedly, I had to look around and ask at several
plumbing stores of where I could find such a fitting. Head over to a
store near the industrial area in town, mainly because ¼" BSP these days
is mainly used on fridges and brake lines etc.

                                                      I purchased mine from

                                                      Tony Powell Plumbing Supplies
                                                      776 Beaudesert Road

Give them a call and maybe they can put you onto someone in Melbourne
that sells them too. Alternatively, they would mail one to you, from
memory mine only cost me $5~10 Au whereas a SS one would have cost $45.

If you are after Stainless Steel fittings then try
www.midwaymetals.com.au/ they have a branch in Dandenong, give them a
ring to find a local source for all the Stainless Steel fittings you can
imagine. If you have no success there then try Atlas metals.

                                                      Hope this helps!

Brass needle valve? Admittedly, I had to look around and ask at several
plumbing stores of where I could find such a fitting. Head over to a
store near the industrial area in town, mainly because ¼" BSP these days
is mainly used on fridges and brake lines etc.

                                                        I purchased mine from

that sells them too. Alternatively, they would mail one to you, from
memory mine only cost me $5~10 Au whereas a SS one would have cost $45.

If you are after Stainless Steel fittings then try

ring to find a local source for all the Stainless Steel fittings you can
imagine. If you have no success there then try Atlas metals.

Hi Bob, are we on the same page here, you are talking about a ¼" BSP Brass needle valve? Admittedly, I had to look around and ask at several plumbing stores of where I could find such a fitting. Head over to a store near the industrial area in town, mainly because ¼" BSP these days is mainly used on fridges and brake lines etc.
