I'd like to try it just so I can see what's going on inside without having to take the lid off my 5 gal. I know HDPE is preferred. And the bucket is easier to clean...

I  used to use 1 gal. Arizona tea jugs, so I could see what was going on inside.  They are hard to clean but great for watching fermentation.  my 2 cents.

Polycarbonates contain bisphenol-A, more commonly known as BPA. BPA has been linked to infertility and other reproductive problems in high doses, although the NIH considers it a negligible threat to adults and pregnant women (who shouldn't be drinking alcohol anyway) and the FDA's current assessment is that it's safe. Its boiling point is over 200 degC, so it's not likely to appear in your distillate in measurable quantities unless you are collecting in a similar container.

Just keep infants from drinking your wash. ;)

It is hard to get inside them, but if not cleaned well, mold builds up inside and will come out into your wash. I finally threw one in the trash last week after soap and water, Clorox, Star San and my air compressor would not remove a black speck of something.

Fermentation is at a very low proof, so the concerns about plastic's ability to hold up are greatly lessened.  I have used Polycarbonate for beer and wine fermentation on and off for years.  Not my first preference though.   Polycarbonate will work fine, but it's brittle as all heck.  Check out these P.E.T fermenters for a clear solution:  http://morebeer.com/category/plastic-pet-carboys.html
