      hi Mrh,

The recipe for Varnelli in definitly a closely guarded secret.
Being a Privately family owned distllery since 1868 for 4
generations that is now corporate with headquarters in Muccia, Italy.

The company's product leader - "Varnelli," a special, dry anise
liquor that holds a record in the sector. This liquor which is a
anise flavored liquor like ouzo also contains a special infusion of
bitters. As in the famous Lesbos ouzo (and Harry please take note):

"Today, Varnelli Distillery Corp is run by the family's fourth
generation: - four women, responsible for the rediscovery and
diffusion of the herbal bitter Tonico-Digestivo."

This, in combination with anise and other herbs was derived from a
recipe for MISTRA Varnelli by his son Antonio Varnelli, who
interpreted and sophisticated the diffused Marchigiano recipe for
      anisette.

      see: http://www.varnelli.it/profilo.php for details.

My advice is to try and get a recipe for Mistra and a bottle of
Varnelli and try and mix and match ingredients till you get
something close (or ask Harry to to get one of his ladies from
Lesbos to steal the recipe :):):)

      Vino es Veritas,
      Jim.
