hey guys just about to braze up and try my new reflux tower
      just a short question

i have been using super turbo yeasts for a while now
when using a reflux tower do you have to wait to
the wash settles right out to distill it or can you chuck some of
      the yeast in with it

i mean the yeast when it is very slowly bubling at about
      995 on the hydrometer
or 1 bubble every 5 mins or so

will it effect the quality in the reflux tower ???
      fusils, bad tastes etc??????

and everyones post latly have been very good questions and answers
congrats to every one whose a member

Folks-thanks for responding so quickly and with good comments. I have
some other questions, once again specifically related to the
Stillmaker design but also applying to stills in general.

If I get my terminology wrong, please correct me. I'm really new
at this so I'm sure I'll make very obvious mistakes. I'd
        like to get
over this stage as soon as possible. Ok…the questions…

        1. Packing

In the original Stillmaker plan, the packing is Raschig rings. I have
read that a lot of you use stainless steel scrubbers. Is there a
large difference in performance? Cleaning? What exactly are scrubbers
and where would I find these? Is "scrubber" a Kiwi term for
        steel
        wool?

        2. The Cooling Pipes

In the original Stillmaker plan, the top and bottom reflux coolers
(the water pipes) go through the main tower on the way to the
condenser. Am I correct in my understanding that they do that, in
part, to cool the vapors in the reflux tower as well as the condenser?

        Rob van Leuven's modification
        (http://www.geocities.com/kiwi_distiller/others.htm) deviates from
the Stillmaker design in that his cooling pipes are placed much
higher on the tower than the original. The concern was that the
cooling pipes were interfering with the fractionating. Wouldn't
that still be the case? It also seems to me that the closer the
cooling pipes are to the thermometer, the more imprecise readings may
become. How does the positioning of the cooling pipes affect the
fractionating and where is the most effective placement of them in
        the tower?

        3. Rate of flow

Would there be any advantage to placing some kind of plumbing valve
on one of the cooling pipes to regulate rate of flow rather than
depending on plumbing water pressure (which around here is pretty
variable depending on housemates taking showers, etc)?

Also, is there a difference if the water flows in the bottom pipe and
out the top or the other way around?

        4. Cleaning

I assume that every part of the still should be cleaned after use to
avoid the funk that my college beer-brewing friends ignored (and paid
for later). Does the packing need to be removed to do this? Is a
        simple water wash good enough?

Thanks again, everyone. I'm enjoying these discussions and am
        really excited about this project.

          1. Packing

In the original Stillmaker plan, the packing is Raschig rings. I have
read that a lot of you use stainless steel scrubbers. Is there a
large difference in performance? Cleaning? What exactly are scrubbers
and where would I find these? Is "scrubber" a Kiwi term for
          steel wool?

          >Yeah, you might know them as pot scourers. Those steel wool things used
for cleaning out dirty pans & dishes - found at the supermarket. Go for
the ones that look like little "slinkies" - spirals - not just the fine
wool ones (but they'll still work nonetheless). These should give about 2-3
times the performance of Rachig rings, because of their greater surface
area. But they will also clog up easier too - so after every run, pour
some boiling water down through your column. You can even do this if you
notice your column starting to "surge" mid-way through a run. After a few
distillations, you might want to pull them out and wash them properly.

          2. The Cooling Pipes

In the original Stillmaker plan, the top and bottom reflux coolers
(the water pipes) go through the main tower on the way to the

          Rob van Leuven's modification
          (http://www.geocities.com/kiwi_distiller/others.htm) deviates from
the Stillmaker design in that his cooling pipes are placed much
higher on the tower than the original. The concern was that the
cooling pipes were interfering with the fractionating. Wouldn't
that still be the case? It also seems to me that the closer the

become. How does the positioning of the cooling pipes affect the
fractionating and where is the most effective placement of them in
          the tower?

          >What you want is that the column works out its own temperature profile
(based on the purity of the distillate in it) from top to bottom. To do
this, don't put additional coolers midway in it. You're aiming to just
deliver it a nice flow of refluxing liquid at the top of the packing at
close to the temperature of the packing at the column top (say 79C at 80%
purity), which will then slowly warm to its own accord as it trickles its
way down towards the pot and loses its alchol to the vapour (to say 93C at
55% purity to match the vapour coming off a 10% wash).

          >The more reflux coming down over the packing, the purer your distillate
will become. So if you put all your cooling tubes at the top of the
column, you'll get the most reflux happening. If you were to put a cooling
tube midway through the column, not only does it disturb the temperature
profile, the vapour that its condensing & turning into reflux will only get
to trickle down over half the packing, and only meet a small bit of the
vapour - so it won't be able to hand over its alcohol as good as reflux
which has had the whole height of packing to do this over.

          >So generate all your reflux at the top.

          >Once the vapour clears the top of the packing, its not going to improve in
          purity any further.
The thermometer is just letting you see whats going on at the top of the
column, not actually driving the control over the fractionating. But yes,
its wise to have a bit of clearance between the cooling tubes & it.

          3. Rate of flow

Would there be any advantage to placing some kind of plumbing valve
on one of the cooling pipes to regulate rate of flow rather than
depending on plumbing water pressure (which around here is pretty
variable depending on housemates taking showers, etc)?

          >yes

Also, is there a difference if the water flows in the bottom pipe and
out the top or the other way around?

          >you want the coldest water going through the final vapour condensor, so to
give it the best performance (dont want ethanol vapour being expelled into
the kitchen!). On the otherhand, you don't want to over-chill (subcool)
the distillate that you're refluxing. The ideal reflux is one just a
smidgeon below its vapour temperature. So no point introducing your cold
house water here - rather use the slightly warmed water thats leaving the
vapour condensor. So this is why you normally plumb them to be cold into
the condensor, then back through the other tubes, with the final exit to
drain from the point closest to the to packing.

          4. Cleaning

I assume that every part of the still should be cleaned after use to
avoid the funk that my college beer-brewing friends ignored (and paid
for later). Does the packing need to be removed to do this? Is a

          >yes - definately defunk - see reply to 1)

Chris, I plumbed a 1/2 inch ball valve into my cooling water input
line and have been very glad I did. You can precisely regulate the
cold water flow rate this way with the advantage being the control is
right on the still rather than at a hose bib or sink faucet away from
the still. I highly recommend this modification!

what's with the 'happy99.worm' worm that was included in your last message
attachment? you probably didn't do it on purpose, I hope, but everyone be
aware, do not run the file, it will infect your machine...
and Leeham, you might want to check your machine, as this worm modifies your
wsock32.dll and sends itself with your email...
