      Dear All

Here is a call for abstracts for a special session at the forthcoming
GeoComputation'03 conference to be held on 8-10 September 2003 in
Southampton, UK. I hope that this is of interest to some of you.

      With best wishes

Spatially Distributed Modelling of Land Surface Processes
A Full Session at the 7th International Conference on GeoComputation

University of Southampton, 8-10 September 2003

      GeoComputation 2003
GeoComputation 2003 is the 7th in a series of successful international
meetings that are concerned with solving geographical problems through the
use of computers. Full details of the conference, which is to be held at
the University of Southampton, are available from the conference home page
      at http://www.geog.soton.ac.uk/users/geocomp/default.asp. The meeting will
comprise a series of special sessions, and the purpose of this circular is
to solicit abstracts for the special session on Spatially Distributed
      Modelling of Land Surface Processes.

      Session Aims and Scope
This session aims to bring together researchers in the field of spatial
dynamics to present and discuss cutting-edge developments in (i) data
handling; (ii) modelling; (iii) computational methods, and (iv) model
validation and applications. Specifically, the scope of the session is
focused on land surface and near-surface processes and submissions
addressing fluvial, ground water, sediment transport, glacial, ecological
and epidemiological dynamics are welcome. Over the last twenty years or so,
enabling computational technology has evolved to the point that spatially
distributed dynamic models (SDDM) have increasingly been applied to address
complex problems in these areas. During that time, research interest has
shifted from basic model development to concerns over fundamental
challenges associated with model implementation. We are therefore seeking
to encourage submissions that address these issues. Examples are presented

" use of remote sensing and geostatistical techniques to handle input data
" approaches to modelling uncertainty in boundary conditions and parameter
" propagation of this uncertainty through the model
" scale issues and grid resolution
" process representation, model definition and parameterisation
" model validation techniques (e.g., limits to accuracy)
" model applications (e.g., scenario-based modelling, case studies,
      decision support)
      " computation and visualisation techniques

It is anticipated that papers selected from the session will be published
      together in a refereed volume.

      Abstract Submission and Timetable
Abstracts for this special session should be submitted in accordance with
the timetable set out below to one of Professor Peter Atkinson
(P.M.Atkinson@...) or Dr Stephen Darby (S.E.Darby@...),
School of Geography, University of Southampton, Southampton, SO17 1BJ, UK.

Deadline for receipt of Abstracts 1 March, 2003
Notification of acceptance 15 April, 2003
Reduced rate conference registration deadline 31 May, 2003
Deadline for receipt of full papers for inclusion in proceedings 15 July, 2003
      Conference 8-10 September, 2003
