- Apr 30, 2014Friends,
Have just received what looks like a superb new book by Dylan Burns:
Apocalypse of the Alien God. Platonism and the Exile of Sethian
Gnosticism, Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press 2014. Of
particular interest to List members may be the chapters "Plotinus against
his Gnostic Friends" and the Appendix: "Reading Porphyry on the Gnostic
Heretics and Their Apocalypses".
Dylan is one of a number of bright young scholars working on the
intersection between Neoplatonism and Gnosticism (another that comes to
mind is Zeke Mazur). These guys are going to produce a lot of good
scholarship over the coming decades, as will Min-Jun Huh, who recently
defended a very well-received Paris dissertation that contains the first
translation of Boethius' first commentary on the Isagoge.
