      Information on Essay Contest:

      "Passion for Youth" Essay Contest
Reach Our Community Kids (ROCK) is sponsoring an essay contest open to teens,
ages 12 to 18, living in Northeast Los Angeles. The essays submitted should
nominate an adult who has touched their life or the lives of other youth, in
a special way. The essay should present why this special adult or "hero"
should receive recognition as an individual who demonstrates a "passion for
      youth."

All the essays received will be judged for format, content, style, and
originality. More than one essay may be selected as "the winner" and the
      author(s) will be awarded a $100 prize on September 28, 2001 at the ROCK's
annual reception and silent auction. In addition, the individuals nominated
in the winners' essays will be recognized for their "passion for youth."

ROCK is a faith-based, nonprofit organization that operates the ROCK Teen
Center, located on the northeast corner of Townsend Avenue and Yosemite Drive
in Eagle Rock. Their mission is to improve the emotional, social, academic
and spiritual development of at-risk teenagers during after-school hours.
They seek to increase youth involvement in positive and safe after-school
activities, enhance youth academic achievement and job skills, increase youth
contacts with positive adult role models, encourage youth commitment to
spiritual growth and improve youth's utilization of community resources.

The essays will be judged on the following criterion:

Deadline: All essays must be received at 1597 Yosemite Drive, Los Angeles,
      CA, 90041, by 5PM, Friday, July 27th, 2001.

Essay topic: Present a thoughtful, creative essay describing the hero in your
life, their passion for youth, and why you feel they deserve recognition. You
may nominate your "hero" because of the extraordinary courage they
demonstrate, or their unyielding determination to do what is right, true, and
just, or their history of extraordinary service to youth.

Style: There is no required style in this contest. The authors are encouraged
to fully express their creativity in a wholesome manner. Essays using foul
or inappropriate language will not be considered for a prize.

Originality: The authors must avoid using someone else's work or words as
their own--no borrowed ideas. Quotes are acceptable, provided the author or
speaker is properly accredited with the words.

Format: All essays must be at least 200 and no more than 500 words in length.
The essay need not be typed but must be neat and legible. A cover sheet
with the following information should be submitted with the essay.
