Perhaps then easier would be to answer " what does it do".
I do not think we can know what it is.

      Hey BETTE!!!!

Some say love, it is a river
      that drowns the tender reed.
Some say love, it is a razor
that leaves your soul to bleed.
Some say love, it is a hunger,
      an endless aching need.
I say love, it is a flower,
      and you its only seed.

It's the heart afraid of breaking
      that never learns to dance.
It's the dream afraid of waking
      that never takes the chance.
It's the one who won't be taken,
      who cannot seem to give,
and the soul afraid of dyin'
      that never learns to live.

When the night has been too lonely
and the road has been to long,
and you think that love is only
for the lucky and the strong,
      just remember in the winter
      far beneath the bitter snows
lies the seed that with the sun's love
in the spring becomes the rose.

Yes, but what is this love?  The ultimate feeling of pleasure?

Love is the ultimate goal and purpose of our existence. Through love
we reach out and touch God (for 'God is Love') and thereby touch
everyone and everything around us. When we connect with love we
connect with God and visa versa. Until my NDE and the encounter with
God I knew only anger, hatred, and despair. But His love removed all
that and filled the empty void within. I probably sound like I'm
preaching from a pulpit when I've been coming down on religions, but
don't fret (LOL) I'm simply sharing from personal experience.
      Regards: Mal
