      NCTTA Newsletter
      February 2009

Division competition heats up and the madness is here a month early! February is jam-packed with 17 division meets, all with Championship implications. Find out who's in and who's out. Plus we've got all the details on the upcoming Killerspin College Team Challenge and the first ever NCTTA video contest.

      Division Highlights
Spring League competition in full swing

      Texas Division
Texas Wesleyan secured its trip to nationals by winning the men's and women's divisions, as their No. 1 team rankings would suggest. Meanwhile, the second place slot was hotly contested between traditional rivals, 11th-ranked Texas and 7th-ranked Texas A&M. Some of the most intense and exciting division play in recent memory, featured Krish Poddar (A&M) edging past Huanyuan Chen (Texas) in 4 very close games and Taylor Hou (Texas) coming from behind in 4 games to defeat Dylan Kwan (A&M).

This set up the 5th and deciding match of the contest: the Texas A&M doubles pairing of Krish Poddar and Srivatsan Ramnath (A&M) squaring off against Texas' Huanyuan Chen and Scott Young. All competition stopped to watch as the match grew more intense. After losing the first game 8-11, A&M stormed back to take the second and third games 11-9 and 11-8. Would the Longhorns give up? Not so fast. Enlivened by the screams of their teammates, Texas fought back to capture the 4th game at 12-10. In the final game, A&M finally overcame UT Austin in a nail-biting 11-9 victory. You can bet both teams are hoping for wildcard spots in this year's Championships.

      Northwest Division
Talk about parity. After Fall and Spring competition, the Northwest Division worked itself into a three-way tie between Washington, Oregon State, and Portland State; but Washington held the edge in the tie-breaker with Oregon State ending up second. Competition was stiff throughout the day. Oregon State's young star Thomas Nguyen led Washington to an essential victory over Penn State by defeating its standout player, Renjith Retnamma. Other exciting matches included an impressive game five win for Oregon State's Frank Liu over Washington's Yeqin Zeng.

      Midwest Division

The Midwest Division was narrowly won by No. 10 Illinois over its main competition No. 13 Wisconson-Madison and No. 15 Lindenwood. Illinois won the deciding doubles match in an exciting bout against Wisconsin to clinch the division title. Meanwhile Lindenwood responded to its 0-5 loss to Illinois earlier in the season by forging a new team of five scholarship athletes from around the world for Spring competition. They were able to edge Wisconsin with another exciting deciding doubles match and secure a trip to the National Championships in Rochester, MN, as the second qualifier in this 8-team division.

      YouTube Video Contest
      Time to get creative ...

The submission deadline for first-ever NCTTA YouTube Video Contest is fast approaching, with less than a month left to put your video together. That's right, it's time to dust off the cameras and show off your directing skills. The winning school/club receives a $400 gift certificate. More prizes to be announced, depending on participation. So, how does this work?
      1. Capture quality video footage at your NCTTA regional tournament or other college table tennis event/activity.
      2. Edit your raw video footage into a short, 1 to 5 minute video.
      3. Post your video on YouTube for the world to see, and enter the contest by notifying treasurer@..., by Sunday, March 22.
Note: Only official or transitional schools in good standing that participate in their regional tournament are allowed to enter.

Once all the entries are in, an NCTTA-appointed panel will review each video. The school with the best entry will be announced at the 2009 NCTTA National Championships, featured on the NCTTA website (and in this newsletter), and will be awarded the $400 gift certificate. Judges will take into account the overall quality of your movie, as well as its promotional value for NCTTA, participating schools, and NCTTA sponsors. Email Francois Charvet with any questions you have.
