(1175) A Man of the Earth - Goodrich
- Mr. Shahpishtwa gunned his car
over the curb, across the lawn, through the rose bed
and half way up the courthouse steps this
morning. Deputies tackled him in the hallway.
booked him for attempted assault.
A recent immigrant.
Innocent of this country.
he had been certain
of his rights, certain the judge
would leave the daughter in his custody.
Hadn't she said, "Yes, Your Honor, he beats me.
Whenever the hearing recessed
he liked to stroll among the flowers
and talk to me as I pulled weeds.
"You understand," he said. "You
are a gardener. You need
beautiful things. Look -
my father gave me theses."
-a strand of luminous jade beads-
"and his father gave them to him. My daughter
belongs to me! You must
go inside and tell them!
You understand. You
are a man of the earth."
