I second the motion on the advice of buying Russ Wolf's Fluteshop
book. All the essentials of building quality flutes are there.

Check out the info in the "Files" section in the folder marked "For
Beginners." The "12 step process..." file is a general outline of
one way to make a flute, and it has keywords you can use to help you
browse the archives. Some of the other files might be useful as well.
You've come to the right place. The good folks here will answer just
about any question you may have. Start with the archives and spend a
little time learning the lingo, then you'll be making flutes before
you know it!
If you go to this forum's files section you will find several files with
how to's and if you go through the old messages (yes we know that there are a
couple thousand) you will have a lot of information that has been freely
passed back and forth between many members.
It's all there for the benefit of the newbies that wish to get their feet wet
and enjoy the sounds and the satisfaction that comes of building their own
There is also another site in Yahoo Basic NAF making that has been recently
started for newbies.
Glad that you have found us! So take a few days to go through the old
messages and enjoy!
