220Celebrate Nashville report; future event planning
- Oct 2, 2011Celebrate Nashville Report
Yesterday, Joelle, Gregg and I taught origami under the Japanese Consulate tent at Celebrate Nashville. Attendance was sparse before noon, but after the parade at noon there was an endless stream of kids wanting to fold something. This time around I had prepared a model menu so that people could pick what they wanted to fold from a set of miniature versions.

The most popular models were the crane and the sonobe cube, although we often tried to redirect people interested in the cube towards folding three units and making the jewel instead of the full cube, just due to time constraints. At some future events, it we might not include the cube in the display. The least popular model was the swan, which had 0 requests that I am aware of, so it may not make the cut in the future.
There were a couple of models that I either forgot to include or that I could not find a good way to attach to the board. I will try to work out something for those before the next event.
Having everything glued down was ideal, as the day was beautiful but very windy at times.
I was thinking that in the future it might be a good idea to split the menu into smaller sub-menus and have different people responsible for one of those sub-menus for some period of time. I haven't really worked out what the best grouping would be (type, complexity, common bases, etc.), but this might help with the issue we had yesterday were Joelle kind of got trapped teaching sonobe units over and over again, as new people would come up wanting to fold it before the last few had the display. The least popular model was the swan, which had 0 requests that I am aware of.

Our next monthly meeting is in two weeks, on October 16th. We will be discussing plans for the event on the 22nd and 23rd as well as our usual open folding.
Hands on Creativity at Plaza
On October 22-23 we are participating in Plaza's demonstration event. Several of us will be there representing the club and teaching simple models to anyone interested. If you want to help and have not discussed it with me, let me know.
Cherry Blossom Festival
The next Cherry Blossom Festival will be on March 24, 2012. This year, the Consulate plans to have an expanded tent filled with demonstrations and has asked us to arrange for our own tent space. On the one hand, this is an opportunity to do more at the event, but on the other hand it is $50 if we can provide a tent and $150 if we cannot. I will be checking to see if Plaza might be interested in sponsoring our tent. In any case, we will need to decide if it is worth it or not. Let me know if you have any suggestions.
