Jeff Butterfield - a true Gentleman
Former English Rugby and British Lions Representative and enthusiastic
Golden Oldie, Jeff Butterfield passed away last Friday April 30 from an
apparent heart attack at his home in England.
Jeff was one of the original International Golden Oldie Board members
representing UK and Europe and the development of the movement in that
region was substantially due to his enthusiasm and efforts. Jeff was
always very dedicated to Golden
Oldies Rugby and while old rugby wounds from his more serious footy days
prevented him from playing at World Festivals he was always there to
look after the administrative side of things.
Apart from his exploits on the field, Jeff became personally known to
thousands of Ruggers during the years he managed The Rugby Club in
London. He was also chief organiser of his beloved "Rugby Club o
London" team to many Golden Oldies World Festivals.
Jeff will also be remembered by New Zealand Rugby fans who saw him play
for the British Lions on their 1959 tour. Golden Oldies Representative
for New Zealand, Lindsay Parke recalls watching them play in Timaru when
Jeff at centre scored three tries.
Jeff remained very loyal to the Golden Oldies Rugby Movement following
his retirement and hand-over to present incumbent, Dave McDonald. His
passing is very much regretted and a minute's silence will be held at
the European Golden Oldies Festival starting in Benidorm this Friday.
The Golden Oldies Rugby Secretariat and Air New Zealand Destinations
conveys to his wife Barbara and other family members sincere sympathy in
the loss of a true gentleman.
