IBM has disk drive breakthrough. Ancient alchemists fruitlessly tried to
find the right combination of chemicals and heat that would transform base
metals like lead and iron into gold. Today, IBM's research scientists will
outline a similar technique for transforming iron and a dash of platinum
into the magnetic equivalent of gold -- a ``nanoparticle'' that can hold a
magnetic charge for as long as 10 years.
