  • So do I. :) From: "lynnmaudlin@^$1 [mythsoc]" To: mythsoc@^$2 Sent: Wednesday, December 2, 2015 5:28 PM Subject: [mythsoc] Mythcon 47 CALL FOR PAPERS The Call for Papers for Mythcon 47 is now up on the Society's website here: I look forward to many wonderful papers! -- Lynn Maudlin, Steward for Mythopoeic Conferences --

  • Howdy, all, I thought Mythies might be interested to know that the next conference of the C.S. Lewis and Inklings Society will be March 31–April 2, 2016 at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. The call for papers is out now, and paper abstracts are due January 30! There are also competitions for the best student and scholar papers, with cash awards. This is an event...

  • I think all the parties involved in the Mythopoeic Society knew that any invitation would be declined. We've been turned down by people are far less celebrity than Colbert. We wanted to invite him back in 2010, but we never expected him to actually come! :) Wendell's approach is probably the only one with any chance of success, though still probably a million to one shot. And then...

  • Oh, don't think it hasn't been discussed! Randy Hoyt and I talked seriously about inviting him for Dallas in 2010, to the point we actually inquired with the Stewards for the go-ahead to approach his people. We were asked not to because another Mythcon was in the planning stages, and that chair had designs on Colbert for thematic reasons. Unfortunately, that Mythcon never...

  • Setting aside Colbert's pronunciation of Sméagol and Gollum (which has always made me grit my teeth a little), his claim that "Sméagol was a kind and friendly hobbit-like creature who [...] enjoyed spending time with his friends and his family" is debatable. Sméagol was already " a mean little soul", "meaner and greedier" than his fellows (Letters #214), and even though this isn...

  • Hey, Andy, I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say, bring on the photos! Most of the photos I've seen so far do not show the complete map, and even for the parts we've seen, the writing isn't always as legible as it might be at better resolution. Thanks in advance for the public service. :) Best, Jason From: "Andrew Higgins asthiggins@^$1 [mythsoc]" To: mythsoc@^$2 Sent: Saturday...

  • It has only just come out. I'm working on a review of it, together with Nicolay's book on the same subject matter. Once that's available, I'll let people know. Ralph Wood I noticed an ad for this, and didn't think it had been discussed here. I...

  • I think that's a very good idea, Berni. Comparisons between Gollum and the Golem have been made, not to mention the Semitic elements of Tolkien's dwarves. Gustav Meyrink's 1915 novel, The Golem, strongly reminds me of the novels of Charles Williams. And I'm sure there are plenty of other fertile avenues for exploring Jewish themes in mythopoeic literature. From: "Berni Phillips...

  • Well, I certainly would be, since you asked. :) Best, Jason From: "Jeremy Edmonds jeremy@^$1 [mythsoc]" To: mythsoc@^$2 Sent: Wednesday, June 10, 2015 9:44 AM Subject: [mythsoc] C.S.
