  • I think that's a very good idea, Berni. Comparisons between Gollum and the Golem have been made, not to mention the Semitic elements of Tolkien's dwarves. Gustav Meyrink's 1915 novel, The Golem, strongly reminds me of the novels of Charles Williams. And I'm sure there are plenty of other fertile avenues for exploring Jewish themes in mythopoeic literature. From: "Berni Phillips...

  • Well, I certainly would be, since you asked. :) Best, Jason From: "Jeremy Edmonds jeremy@^$1 [mythsoc]" To: mythsoc@^$2 Sent: Wednesday, June 10, 2015 9:44 AM Subject: [mythsoc] C.S. • I sent a gentle email to Anthony Domestico, who was embarrassed and assured me he would try to get it fixed. Thus the battle is won, but the war goes on. • Congratulations to all the nominees! Also interesting to note that McFarland has had an MSA finalist in the running every year since their first appearance in 2008 (seven books, eight years in a row), so congratulations to them as well. I'd say they're cultivating a really solid portfolio! Best, Jason From: "'Oberhelman, D' d.oberhelman@^$1 [mythsoc]" To: "mythsoc@^$2" Sent: Monday...

  • Thanks for bringing this to our attention, Wendell. I wonder if you'd be willing to contact Time and/or the review's author to inform them of their mistake. I tried to find the review online, but couldn't, so I don't even know who wrote the review, nor could I read it to nitpick it for myself. Like Wayne, I got an early ARC of this book as well as the final published version...

  • "Modern sources – really? Yes!" Who out there is denying this? And as for the claim that "modern but non-Inklings-related influence has remained almost entirely unexplored", well, that is patently incorrect. Worse, it really concerns me to see my book cited in support of the claim that Tolkien was "receptive only to medieval sources", when my book really says quite the opposite...

  • Marvelous to hear about the reprint of Tolkien's obit for Henry Bradley. I have a photocopy, but I really look forward to reading the commentary! Would I be right in presuming this includes a translation of Tolkien's accompanying verses in Old English?
