Report on Tolkien panel in San Francisco
- Paul Thomas kindly gave permission to post this report sent to
another Tolkien list:
A Mythopoeic Society panel consisting of Edith Crowe, David
Bratman, Arden Smith, and Bill Welden gave a lively and admirable
presentation yesterday at Borderlands Books in San Francisco.
Singly and jointly, the panelists discussed (among other things) the
following topics: a survey of Tolkien's fiction; the relationship
between the one-volume Silmarillion and the History of Middle-
earth; the relationships between the Silmarillion, the Hobbit, and
the Lord of the Rings; Tolkien's sources and inspirations; Tolkien's
invented languages and their role in the creation of Middle-earth;
the riddle scene in the Hobbit and Tolkien's revisions of the Hobbit;
why Tolkien's created history is unique; the common criticisms
aimed at Tolkien; and reasons for Tolkien's popularity.
The event began at 3 p.m. and went into the evening. About twenty
people attended, asked many good questions, and participated in a
trivia contest sponsored by the bookstore.
