Just spent some time checking out the link Diamond passed on. It's primarily a resource for librarians who provide this kind of service, or libraries that are thinking about setting one up, but it also gives some links to specific on-line reference desks of various libraries. One immediate drawback--a lot of the services are available to only a library's "regular" clients, e.g. students at the college or residents of the metropolitan area being served; on some, you enter your library card number or other ID# to access.

A faster idea (rather than trolling through all the linked sites looking for one you can access) might be to check out your own library's website, if it has one, to see if it offers an on-line reference service.

OTOH, this looks like a great site for librarians to learn more about providing or improving this kind of service.
