writing about the need for a dramatizer to take liberties, in his letter to
Terence Tiller of the BBC (Letters, p. 255). But it seemed to me that she
either did not realize or did not point out that Tolkien was asking the
question of whether this was necessary, not declaring that it was so.
Perhaps also she did not observe that Tolkien was speaking the
politeness-language of Old Western Man (as Shippey once called it), and
that two pages later in Letters he expresses a much more blunt, much less
courteous evaluation of Tiller's work.
