      Background: pretty much you can trust anything by Katharine Briggs. Don't have her ENCYCLOPEDIA OF FAIRIES (also known as THE DICTIONARY OF FAIRIES) with me, but that's where I'd go for the answer. If it can wait till Monday I'll dig out her entry.
