What I found out when researching a paper on attempts to film LotR is that
Tolkien sold the film and merchandise rights in 1958, a year before his
retirement, according to an article in Wired in 2001. Film and stage
rights, and licensing rights to names, characters, and places in
Middle-earth, are currently owned by the Saul Zaentz Company; you can visit
