For the next AMS panel of the Study Group on Jewish Studies and Music, the chair and board would like to invite proposals for individual presentations or a complete panel of four to five papers. Although the group is open to presentations on any theme, we would be especially interested in building on the 2012 meeting by assembling a session on the theme of Commemoration and Revivalthe negotiation of time and memory and the ways in which past and present converge in music. Commemoration and revival are in some ways very different topics but they also overlap in ways worthy of exploration. Papers on this topic may focus on musical compositions, groups or events that aim at commemoration and/or revival, including observance of national/regional holidays and synagogue/building dedications, as well as definitions and contestations involved in this realm of inquiry.
Please send 500 word abstracts by February 1, 2013 to jewishstudiesandmusic2013 at gmail.com. If proposing a complete panel, please send a description of the panel as a whole as well as 500 word abstracts of each paper involved.
