Skip should have kept this as Dr. Diesel, Foley Engines, and me... -but maybe not to the entire Morgan community and every Google hit with Foley Marine

Skip  should have kept this as "Dr. Diesel, Foley Engines, and me..."  -but maybe not to  the entire Morgan community and every Google hit with "Foley Marine" in it ...  yes, everything we "blog" is picked up by google.

I suppose Skip  will not be ordering parts for the Flying Pig  from Foley in the future, but I will, maybe others will have to as well - provided Foley stays in business....maybe we should .think bigger picture

I am not defending Foley, and if Skip was overcharged or ripped off, that is not right and it  should be corrected.  If he needs help from the Better Business Bureau to be reimbursed, then he should go down this road as well ..

I am a Long Island boy, second generation dealing with Foley in Massachusetts.  My Dad dealt with him over many years chartering ChipperB ( ferro cement Samson design, 58 foot LOA )  out of Sag Harbor - he told me that he was honest and fair with him.

So, I appreciate Skip sharing what he experienced, but we have not heard "the other side of the story".  Even with every word with Foley quoted from recall or a recording -  we did not necessarily here from Foley, did we ..

So,  I suspect that there is some miscommunication, strong personalities involved and this will all settle out.   At least  I hope so .

So, what is the outcome with all this exchange with this forum ?  Here is my story ...maybe reconsider your conclusions

        *******************

There are not that many folks out there  dealing with Perkins parts.  My 4-154,  I hope,  has thousands of hours left on it.   I am going to need help from as many folks that I can find with Perkins parts.  I scour ebay and craigslist looking.

I deal with Shirley at Transatlantic Diesel (TAD), and yes, I have learned to deal with Dr. Diesel at Foley Marine-  and learned the hard way.  Both TSD and Foley Marine  each seem to have the parts when I need them.  Skip mentions alternative suppliers and other sources, but I have yet to find many of these.

I learned how to call Foley.  I know make it a point that  I knew exactly what I want and the engine serial number it was for.  I once got  "into it" one time on the phone with Dr. Diesel, emailed him my thoughts after ,  and he later sent me an apology by email - he want on to recommend in the email to get  a shop manual and a book by Nigel Calder - I did both.   Honestly, I had called "trying to get smart"  on a topic, I suppose at his expense, and it did not look like I was going to buy anything from him, he knew it, and was somewhat  abrupt to get off the phone.

He does not have much patience dealing with folks shopping around, dealing with the DIY type trying to get smart on his nickel, then buying somewhere else.  So, I know this now.  He does have a pretty cool selection of Tech Notes on his webpage.

So, I just got the other day from Foley  one of the last known new spare fresh water pump for the 4-154.  Any of you know someone with one of these ?    TAD did not have it.   I called with my engine serial number and made sure it was the right part.  Was very specific and careful and to the point.   He missed sending me a gasket, but when I later called he gave me the direction I needed on how to locally manufacture one.

So, how many of you have entered a shop with an old cantankerous  fella behind a counter, who REALLY knew his stuff, but was hard to deal with ?  Couple this person who has someone create a website to help his struggling business and tries to deal "on llne".  He is not quite the "wired" dude and probably gets frustrated AND SELECTIVE with the many calls he gets.   Well, I bet this is Foley Marine  -pretty sure of it !

We all remember the Sienfeld episode in the deli ?  The cranky guy behind the counter points out Seinfeld or Elaine and says " NO SOUP FOR YOU".  Well , this could be Dr. Diesel.    By the way, the soup was good.

Sorry to hear that Skip had a much worse experience, but again, maybe "No soup for you" ,but for the rest of us, our sources are limited, so, when you need a part, Foley  may be the only one with it  -he will know this (it will not be found at Kmart) - so better you know all this before calling, be clear and concise get what you need and go cruising !

I would prefer to see him in business as a supplier - even if he is a little cranky.  Craigslist transactions or ebay bidding and arguing with cyberspace would be worse.

I feel soooooo much better with my new fresh water pump installed and the older rebuilt one as a spare - especially knowing that I have a larger alternator that works the fresh water pump bearings harder than the 60 amp OEM alternator.  A beautiful feeling.   That feeling alone gets me way beyond dealing with moody dude.

Where there is smoke there is fire, I think Skip has every right to share his less than satisfactory Foley experience with the other people in the group and the web. If a business wants to be quirky and rude that is their right, but on the same note as  pointed out about having to learn to talk to Foley,  I do not want to waste my time on someone who is rude and not willing to help me determine the parts I need. I called them last year to inquire about a double pulley for a Perkins and ask if they also made a kit for converting to a serpentine belt such as TAD puts together, the guy hug up on me. Since I was calling from Japan, I thought I had lost the connection, so I called back and started to repeat my question, he hung up on me again. Yes, I was price shopping, but I’ll be go to hell in a hand basket if I’m going to plop my hard earned buck down, without checking around for a better price.

From what I've read most individuals who have reported on Foley tried to be tactful with little if any success.  I personally would not waste my time.  I go to Southeast Power Systems Of Tampa, 6515 E Adamo Dr, Tampa, FL 33619, (800) 329-7582, for Perkins 4-108 parts.  They require your engine serial number to find the parts but they seem to be able to get them.

Subject: [morganowners] Dr. Diesel, Foley Engines, and me... .... "No soup for you ! "

Skip  should have kept this as "Dr. Diesel, Foley Engines, and me..."  -but maybe not to  the entire Morgan community and every Google hit with "Foley Marine" in it ...  yes, everything we "blog" is picked up by google.

I suppose Skip  will not be ordering parts for the Flying Pig  from Foley in the future, but I will, maybe others will have to as well - provided Foley stays in business.... maybe we should .think bigger picture

My Dad dealt with him over many years chartering ChipperB ( ferro cement Samson design , 58 foot LOA )  out of Sag Harbor - he told me that he was honest and fair with him.

              ************ *******

There are not that many folks out there  dealing with Perkins parts.  My 4-154,  I hope,  has thousands of hours left on it.   I am going to need help from as many folks that I can find with Perkins pa rts.

So, how many of you have entered a shop w ith an old cantankerous  fella behind a counter, who REALLY knew his stuff, but was hard to deal with ?  Couple this person who has someone create a website to help his struggling business and tries to deal "on llne".  He is not quite the "wired" dude and probably gets frustrated AND SELECTIVE with the many calls he gets.   Well, I bet this is Foley Marine  -pretty sure of it !

We all remember the Sienfeld episode in the deli ?  The cranky guy behind the counter points out Seinfeld or Elaine and says " NO SOUP FOR YOU".  Well , this could be Dr. Diesel.    By the way, the soup was good.

Sorry to hear that Skip had a much worse experience, but again, maybe "No soup for you" ,but for the rest of us, our sources are limited, so, when you need a part, Foley  may be the only one with it  -he will know this (it will not be found at Kmart) - so better you know all this before ca lling, be clear and concise get what you need and go cruising !

I've not had a chance to check the other places this thread appeared, but I've heard back from the BBB.

Apparently Foley has more than one friend, as someone alerted him to a couple of my various locations I originally posted to, but to this date, I've seen exactly ONE (here) positive comment, and (not knowing what's come up since my last on the subject, a couple of weeks ago, I expect many more), a dozen or so confirmations of my experience.

When I get back to regular connectivity, I'll update the thread  :{))
