I have been on this list for a short time, and have been trying to read many of the past posts.

I've seen some of the websites with wonderful books.  Most are beyond my reach, but I do love to look at them and imagine...

I would like to try my hand at making some attempt at printing something for myself.  It seems as though there should be some sort of template to use with all this computer technoligy.  A simple program to use for such a purpose, that would lay out the pages correctly for the signatures.  Something affordable.

I have 2 goals in mind:

first, to reproduce some of my personal favorites in miniature for my dollhouse.

second, I have developed many knitting patterns in miniature over the years and dream of publishing an actual miniature book of knitting patterns for doll house size items.

Hopefully some kind person can point me in the right direction to go.  I realize most of the people on this list are very successful, busy people and I hope it isn't too presumptuous of me to ask for help.  I just don't know where to begin.

      thanks

That depends on what you mean by 'lay out the pages correctly'. If
you want a program to reorganise the pages into the right sequence
for one signature, that is not difficult - even some word
processors may have this facility. If you want a book rather than
a booklet, i.e. several signatures, you will probably need
specialist software, though there may be something around that
isn't an outrageous price. If you want the pages not only ordered
correctly, but imposed, i.e. lots of pages arranged on one sheet
for printing, then you will be hard pressed to find anything
affordable. Imposition software tends to be professional level,
specialist etc., everything that adds noughts to the price.

Try investigating Pagemaker. That has a plug-in that comes with
the program, called Build Booklet. It is pretty sophisticated,
allowing for adjustable gutters and creep, as well as for several
layouts - including 2 up, 3 up, 4 up. What I don't know is exactly
what scope all this has, as I've not used it for anything
non-basic. It mentions imposition, but I suspect that might not
go further than ordering the pages. And I haven't spotted anything
else relating to signatures. Of course you could treat each
signature as a separate booklet and do things that way, if
        necessary.

Pagemaker is a pretty advanced program, though not difficult to
use, and has crashed in price since Adobe launched InDesign, so
you can get a lot of power for a fairly small outlay. But no DTP
program is so easy that it does everything for you - it does take
thought and planning to construct any book design.

        Good luck with your project.

        Tim

In the past I have made little books for friends by folding a sheet of paper
into 16 sections and then numbering them so when I opened the paper it would
show which pages went where and if they should be right side up or not.
Then after much copying & pasteing I glued all the pages onto that sheet in
the right sequence and orientation. Both sides. That would be my master
and then I would make copies. the only thing I had to be careful for was to
be sure the second side was cpoied correctly to corospond with the first
          side.
these were generously called "artist books" by my friends, but they were
          really just simple amusements.

Now I am thinking that if my graphics program can print out a greeting card
with the proper orientation it certainly should be capeable of doing the
same thing for a little book with the proper template....
obviously the template is the biggest obsticle for me. I haven't been able
          to find any.
The latest graphic program I've bought is Printmaster Platinum 7.0 - which
is so confusing I don't know where to start. I think it has the tools to
make one, but just don't know how.
another member has suggested MS Word. I also have Corel 7 which my husband
has said might work. I just don't know how to go about it.

Since I would like to make a few copies of several books, it just seems it
would be worth the effort to get a template made, so that what ever book I
wanted to make the basics are there and I would just have to get the
information together. It would be much nicer if I could just buy one.....

I live in a very rural part of Iowa, miles and miles from anything that even
          resembles a city.

thank you all for being so paitent with me. I hope I'm not too annoying to
those of you who are Real bookmakers.

          thanks
