My great-grandmother, Yasha Riva (Rivka) Miller, was active in the
underground movement to help Jews escape conscription into the Czar's army.
According to my grandfather's account, his mother was known all over the
region, in many towns. People would arrive on their doorstep seeking help in
leaving the country. Most of the people she helped were young men seeking to
avoid conscription into the czar's army.
My grandfather also escaped in this manner. A Polish peasant was hired to
purchase rail and steamship tickets. He was hidden and then transported at
night to the rail station. He traveled by rail through Poland to the German
border, then though Germany to the Port of Bremerhaven where he boarded a
steamship for England. He later came to America by steamship from England,
and ended up in Detroit, Michigan, where he lived the rest of his life.

My great-grandfather, Leib Miller, was a Rabbi, who taught Torah students in
his home. He earned a living working in a button factory.
