Kurt, many manufacturers of gauge blocks suggest anhydrous lanolin (like Lano-Lube) and some machinists use petroleum jelly cut with mineral spirits.  Just apply a little and then wipe it off with a clean, lint-free cloth.  The film that remains is thick enough to prevent corrosion, but thin enough that it won't influence the stack measurement.
