Subject: 1540 Tape Drive
I was the person that worked on the the Midway's 1540 tape drive to
bring it to life. I'm afraid that you will be disappointed in how this
The unit was demilitarized by the shipyard when the ship was
decommissioned. In addition to removing most of the circuit boards, they
also cut most of the wire harnesses and took sledgehammers to the card
cages. Even if we had the technical manuals we would not have been able
to repair the damage that had been done. Being a former Navy Data System
Technician, I knew how it would have looked when operating. I machined
new motor mounts so I could use commercially available motors, and then
designed a series of circuits to generate random data for the data
registers as well as control signals that would move the tape CW and CCW
and the tension arms up and down.
We don't have any technical documentation at all. If I do run across any
documentation for the 1540 I will pass it along to you.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
