      This was pretty common. Gimix used an external synchronous data separator in their 1771 based SS-30 "58" controller as well.

      >Yes, the data separator in the WD1771 wasn't very good! Cromemco chose to use external data separators (on the 8" drive itself, actually) with their 4FDC, which used the WD1771. IIRC, the 4FDC /did/ use the internal data separator for 5.25" drives.
