      One of the most absurdly
      easy,impeccably effective
      and frustratingly difficult
      of all meditation techniques
      is simple Quiet Awareness.

      The rational process,
      the thinking mind - what
      is commonly called the ego,
      simply cannot accept that
      just being quiet, just
      being, can be an effective
      means of managing stress
      and the beginnings of an
      attendant clean, calm
      and peaceful mind.

      In private practice
      as a meditation teacher
      and hypnotherapist, I
      recently had a client
      who came to me with
      a bag full of woes.
      He would put his hands
      over his eyes and
      break into soft sobs
      every few minutes.

      At one point, I said
      to him, "Stop. Just
      sit up and be here
      in this room without
      any internal narrative.
      Take a few seconds to
      simply look around and
      notice what is in
      the room."

      In about 10 seconds,
      he said, "Wow! You just
      hypnotized me. How
      did you do that?"

      I explained that I
      didn't do anything,
      that he had discovered
a way to take a break
      from his constant
      internal chatter
      by just going into
      Quiet Awareness.

      And I asked him to
      do this Quiet Awareness
      technique a few times
      a day, until our next
      session, a week later.

      He didn't. The next
      week he just started
      over with the same bag
      of woes, playing an
      endless loop of all
      the troubling internal
      chatter.

      What could I say?

      Quiet, please.
