raising the stakes/commitment
- paraphrased from Daniel Dennett's new book, "Freedom Evolves."
Two farmers go to a outhouse at the end of work one day. As the older
farmer rises and pulls his trousers up a quarter falls out of his
pocket and drops down into the hole. "Damn" he says and proceeds to
pull a five dollar bill out of his wallet, throwing it down the hole
as well. The younger farmer, scratching his head asks him, "why in the
world did you go and do that?" The older farmer replies, "you don't
think I'm goin' down there just for a quarter, do you?"
