"If you find it difficult to focus the mind
with a mantra, try some prayer first. Prayer
brings in more thoughts and ideas, but it can
also lead into a peaceful feeling and calmness
of mind. It can really help you embody divine
attributes, because you are communicating with
God and what you think you will become. Repeating
a mantra has a little different effect. It creates
a harmonious vibration, that even helps the body.
Before you begin your mantra japa, you can say a
little prayer. The prayer collects the mind, makes
the mind more calm, one-pointed and elevates it
with nice ideals. When the mind becomes quieter,
more one-pointed, then you can slowly go into the
repetition of the mantra. In this way, you can
combine prayer and mantra japa.
