I assume this antique table was made of oak? I would use a nice linseed oil finish that will give the piece a nice satin shine while making it easy to repair and restore at a later date. Plus, that is probably what was used when it was made.
A linseed oil finish requires more work to do, but the finish is so much nicer.
I hate the look of shiney plastic poly finish on antiques, it just does not work for me.

My husband I don't have to worry about. It's highly unlikely that he'd notice, which at times is very convenient. He usually just wants to know if he needs to go pick up take out or not.
