marquetry vs. inlay addendeum
- Inlay started a couple of thousand years ago by the egyptians and a few others. Then came what is called Intarsia which is where an object is made of several different types of wood usually in a decorative pattern, it is much thicker than either inlay or marquetry and usually about 1/2" or more. Intarsia is quite expensive and with the advent of better saws made of higher grade metals; thinner slices of expensive woods could be cut cheaper for use in making decorative items for those not as affluent

Inlay is where you would remove matrial from a background piece of wood and lay in some type of material usually wood but sometimes metal or shell or some other decorative material. Marquetry is sually all wood and it is a decorative pattern either geometric or a picture of some type. Marquetry can also be considered Parquetry where you have a decorative designed floor. The floor in the Louvre in the movie The Davinci Code is a prime example of Marquetry/Parquetry.Michaeus
