Group Description

Students of mass communication are witness to the intrigues of media empires and their incestuous relations with global business enterprises. On August 17, 2017, Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) became 53 years old. Indian Institute of Mass Communication Old Students Association (IIMCOSA) comprises of journalists from 96 countries and media professionals in India who have passed out of IIMC. MediaVigil is a forum of IIMCOSA for journalists from countries of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) for the establishment of a New International Information and Communication Order as envisaged in the UNESCO's MacBride Report of 1980. The capture of academic institutes like IIMC by free trade fanatics is a matter of grave concern at time when the approach of advertising and public relations companies besides financial institutions towards natural resource, human beings and workers is cannibalistic. Major media companies have cross-media ownership. Amidst emergence of "threat to our democratic structure", MediaVigil seeks regulation of cross-media ownership of broadcasting, print and news media. It demands implementation of the recommendations of the First Press Commission (1954) and the original recommendations of the Press Council of India (PCI)'s on Paid News. It supports the demand for Third Press Commission. PCI should be entrusted with the responsibility of regulating broadcast media and internet. After all what is regulated is communication of information. The UN Declaration on Cultural Diversity that came in to force in March 2007 (isolating US and Israel) is a step in the right direction but US control of internet & communications technology remains intact. "Who Owns What?" influences the information flow in media. Politics shapes information flow, but is also shaped by it. "The more the media matters, the more we must track what it does."
