Mentor a refugee family! (Volunteer opportunity)
International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Baltimore resettles approximately 700 refugees of all ages and from over 20 nations every year out of our Southeast Baltimore office. Our mission is to help newly arrived refugees become independent and self-sufficient by assisting them with services such as temporary financial assistance, job placement, cultural and community orientation, and referrals for health, education and social services. Volunteers such as Family Mentors play a crucial role in ensuring that refugees are able to meet these goals.
Family Mentors support newly-arrived refugee families by helping them learn basic life skills and discover American culture. Mentors provide friendly encouragement as refugees adjust to life in the U.S.
As a Family Mentor, you might:
Assist your family in becoming familiar with the local community, including transportation systems, grocery stores and restaurants, and recreational areas Help them manage their household affairs Practice English and language skills Engage in cultural exchange and explore Baltimore Other related activities according to need and interest - every family is different!
Approximately 3-5 hours per week, for at least 6 months. Hours and days are flexible, based on the mentor's and family's schedules.
