      Hi Vern and Dave,

Thanks for the advice regarding the points, plain soldering the points would be a better method and I will do  that.  A spare set would be handy so I will follow up the points from RV Anderson  – Dave could you let me have contact details.

I have recently learnt of a modern distributor that is custom made to replace the magneto on the 2 cylinder Maxwells (also Buick and others). I believe it can be had with or without electronic ignition.  I have seen photos and it is a very neat looking unit.  Personally I would rather keep my car authentic but if this is not a concern or you do not have a magneto this would be a practical solution.  Available from Dave Hentschel at Hentschel Automotive PO Box 172 Crete IL,  phone 708 597 3739.

      Hello David:

We have been away on a Model T Tour and I am now catching up on the mail.  I know of no place where we can get the complete points set for these Splitdorf Mags.  It is an easy fix to get the tungsten points. These are the same as used in the vibrator coils like in a Model T Ford coil. I have gotten them from the place that makes new points for the Ford coil.   As you suggested you can get them from a modern points set.  The point can be silver soldered, but that requires more heat.  The originals were just held with plain solder, and that seems to be all that is needed.  I have replaced many of them.

Before I grind off the old contact points from the magneto on our Maxwell AC and try silver soldering on new ones cut from a modern points set, does anyone know of a source for new ones. Any comments would be appreciated.
