in fact when the Assembley (the Convention) decided
to put Robespierre, Saint-Just, Couthon under arrest
, Robespierre's brother Augustin asked to be put
himself under arrest!
He could have saved his life,
but he preferred to follow his ideals!

Hello! I'm sorry I haven't posted lately. Since
2001 is almost over, I wish you all a Happy New
Year!
I just read something that bothered me a lot. In
his book, "Le Passe d'une Illusion", French historian
Francois Furet (a specialist in the French Revolution)
compares the execution of the partisans of Danton and
Hebert to the way Stalin eliminated his opponents.
Personally, I believe that comparing Robespierre to Stalin is
truly unfair. There was nothing noble about Stalin,
after all... And besides, Danton was executed because
he was corrupt and Hebert because he lead a very
violent faction!
I would like to know what is your
opinion.
Thanks a lot!!!
Anca
