Dedicated to developing new audiences for music rooted in Balkan, Slavic, and Caucasian women's vocal traditions, Kitka also strives to expand the boundaries of folk song as a living and evolving expressive art form. The Oakland-based ensemble has been performing together for over 30 years. Under the co-direction of Shira Cion, Juliana Graffagna, and Janet Kutulas since 1997, Kitka has grown to earn recognition from the National Endowment for the Arts, Chorus America, and the American Choral Directors'; Association as one of this country's premier touring vocal ensembles. Proceeds from evening will go directly toward paying down the mortgage on the Lakeside Married Student Apartments, which presently house 18 seminary families on campus and are filled to capacity. The evening will begin with a cocktail hour at 6:00 PM, with open bar and exquisite hors d’oeuvres, and with seminarian musicians entertaining guests as they mingle and mix with seminary students, faculty, and administration. Guests then will enjoy a fabulous buffet at 7:00 PM prepared by the seminary chef, Nat Fasciano, while they cheer on competing chefs, His Grace Benjamin and Fr Alexander Rentel, whose cuisine will be judged by local celebrity “foodies.” His Grace is an alumnus of St Vladimir’s and is bishop of the Diocese of San Francisco and the West in the Orthodox Church in America ; Fr Alexander is Assistant Professor in Canon Law and Byzantine Studies at the seminary—both are talented gourmet cooks.

            One of the few mixed gender performing ensembles in Georgia, Zedashe has developed a highly distinctive sound, which captures the traditional way of singing in the home. Their repertoire includes three-part harmony chants from the Georgian Orthodox Christian liturgy and a full range of folk genres including work songs, love songs, historical ballads, war dance songs and ritual circle dances, sometimes accompanied by traditional instruments. The group's name is taken from the special earthenware jugs - zedashes - used for making wine.

              Saint John of San Francisco Monthly Retreats

               

              Theme: “Recovery Retreat – Carrying the Message: Renewing our Commitment and Gratitude (for various stages in recovery)
