Yeah you can pretty much gut all the PC hardware, driver boards( although they are a nice version the LM18200 2.5 A stepper driver ) and power supplies. the back plane makes for easy service and easy mounting for the power supply and the G540. My buddy who did the final upgrade took out the front control panel and put speed and power switches in it's place. A G-540 is about as easy as it gets! Granted soldering the DB9 connectors takes a bit of skill but that is the worst of it. I don't remember the color codes for the stock steppers. Usually they are pretty weak as the magnets degrade over time. The original stepper on the Z axis was having trouble not losing steps. There are tutorials that describe how to use an ohm meter to figure out which wires are pairs. Once you do that It's pretty easy. There's also tons of help available on the gecko site. The manual is pretty easy to follow. Good steppers are cheap these days! You may want to upgrade the power supply if you do. The voltage regulator ( LM 317 ) on the stock power supply is only rated for 1.5A IIRC it was putting out ~37V. When we up graded the steppers and installed the g 540 I think we used a 5A, 48V supply. If you want I can hook you up with my friend who actually did most of the upgrades. I think there's another fellow on that list that goes by IIRC "Old BOB" that has done the same modification as well. Rob

Thank you for the information :). I am just getting back to my project. I tried searching for posts on cnczone.com and the only thing that comes up is a D&M mill documentation thread. Seems like nobody really found a solution there. Would there be any tutorials? From what I gathered I can wire up the motors directly into the Gecko g540 and eliminate the motor boards? The 37 volt power supply could stay, but all of the floppy disk hardware should be easy enough to remove.

      Thanks again,

      Alex

I've been putting together a shopping list for the machine. http://www.kelinginc.net/GeckorDriver.html seems to be a cost effective website. Has anyone ordered from them before? I am looking at the gecko g540, 48v power supply, and new stepper motors. Should I go with the 48V 7.3A or 12.5A power supply? I did talk to another vendor and the 7.3A should be plenty, but I just want to make sure. Also, kelinginc offers NEMA motors. I am slightly baffled with which motor I should go with for my x,y, and z. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again, Alex

Rob

Seems like nobody really found a solution there. Would there be any tutorials? From what I gathered I can wire up the motors directly into the Gecko g540 and eliminate the motor boards? The 37 volt power supply could stay, but all of the floppy disk hardware should be easy enough to remove.

It's been a while but I think there was a thread on cnc Zone.Cliff's notes version. You strip out all the old PC parts. On the stepper boards there's -,+,clock,DIR. The machine has a ~37V power supply. You run power to the +/- and step pulses go to the clock pin. Dir to the Dir pin. It's a pretty easy mod. That's enough to get you going. It's even better if you use G540 and replace the drivers. There's also a good chance the steppers are tired and you'll eventually want to replace those. Sure line is a good source for parts. A to Z cnc also makes some nice retrofit mounts. I thought it was a pretty decent machine to learn on. I've since moved on. Rob To: mach1mach2cnc@yahoogroups.com

              Alex,

I buy all my motors from Rick at www.homeshopcnc.com. I checked with
Amazon.com yesterday and they had a 48 volt power supply for about $39.00. I
plan to buy four of them today.

I've been putting together a shopping list for the machine.
http://www.kelinginc.net/GeckorDriver.html seems to be a cost effective
website. Has anyone ordered from them before? I am looking at the gecko
g540, 48v power supply, and new stepper motors. Should I go with the 48V
7.3A or 12.5A power supply? I did talk to another vendor and the 7.3A
should be plenty, but I just want to make sure. Also, kelinginc offers
NEMA motors. I am slightly baffled with which motor I should go with for my
x,y, and z. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again, Alex

although they are a nice version the LM18200 2.5 A stepper driver ) and
power supplies. the back plane makes for easy service and easy mounting for
the power supply and the G540. My buddy who did the final upgrade took out
the front control panel and put speed and power switches in it's place. A
G-540 is about as easy as it gets! Granted soldering the DB9 connectors
takes a bit of skill but that is the worst of it. I don't remember the color
codes for the stock steppers. Usually they are pretty weak as the magnets
degrade over time. The original stepper on the Z axis was having trouble
not losing steps. There are tutorials that describe how to use an ohm
meter to figure out which wires are pairs. Once you do that It's pretty
easy. There's also tons of help available on the gecko site. The manual
is pretty easy to follow. Good steppers are cheap these days! You may want
to upgrade the power supply if you do. The voltage regulator ( LM 317 ) on
the stock power supply is only rated for 1.5A IIRC it was putting out
~37V. When we up graded the steppers and installed the g 540 I think we
used a 5A, 48V supply. If you want I can hook you up with my friend who
actually did most of the upgrades. I think there's another fellow on that
list that goes by IIRC "Old BOB" that has done the same modification as
              well. Rob

comes up is a D&M mill documentation thread. Seems like nobody really found
a solution there. Would there be any tutorials? From what I gathered I can
wire up the motors directly into the Gecko g540 and eliminate the motor
boards? The 37 volt power supply could stay, but all of the floppy disk
hardware should be easy enough to remove.

easy. It's been a while but I think there was a thread on cnc Zone.Cliff's
notes version. You strip out all the old PC parts. On the stepper boards
there's -,+,clock,DIR. The machine has a ~37V power supply. You run power
to the +/- and step pulses go to the clock pin. Dir to the Dir pin. It's a
pretty easy mod. That's enough to get you going. It's even better if you
use G540 and replace the drivers. There's also a good chance the steppers
are tired and you'll eventually want to replace those. Sure line is a good
source for parts. A to Z cnc also makes some nice retrofit mounts. I
thought it was a pretty decent machine to learn on. I've since moved on.

I've lost track of the number of stepper motors and drives purchased
from them directly and via other companies that I work with.

They have always been responsive to any problems. It is a good,
reliable company and they have a lot in stock.

A bigger supply won't get as hot for it's given load so it will tend to last longer. Head room is always a good thing. IIRC the G540 has a ~ 7A fuse but I'd look that up to be sure. It's been awhile. Rob

I have some new and very lightly used Nema 34(3) & 23(2) steppers and 2 digital drives by Keling I would like to sell. I upgraded to AC servo but all the old stuff worked great. Bought some from Automation Technologies, Anaheim Auto and CNC4PC.

Get in touch if yourself or any other interested parties. Will cut a deal. If this is wrongly placed sorry for that.

Regarding the DC power, I like Antek out of Jersey a bit more money but looks nice and beefy. Using it now...perfect, 500 watt. Can get it with optional 5V for logic too.

                        Robert,

You may want to upgrade the
power supply if you do. Rob

I believe I have made some progress sorting through the Sherline mill set up online. From what I gathered they are running a Nema 23 1/4 inch shaft motor. The kit they offer has 135oz motors. Since the 23 is factory I was thinking about purchasing a Nema23 425 oz. I did purchase a 48 volt 7.3A 350 Watt power supply. From what I found this power supply can run 4 stepper motors at 3.5 amps.

Since my D&M mill is a Sherline I should be able to bolt up a Nema23 with a higher oz rating.

The factory set up uses some sort of coupler/sleeve to connect the motor to the axis. Does this info sound realistic? Still working through my learning curve.

You may want to upgrade the

When we up graded the steppers and installed the g 540 I think we used a 5A, 48V supply. If you want I can hook you up with my friend who actually did most of the upgrades. I think there's another fellow on that list that goes by IIRC "Old BOB" that has done the same modification as well. Rob

Rob

I think I was getting ahead of myself after I looked around some more. I found a site mentioning: The 425's are more powerful than what a Sherline CNC machine requires, and are not recommended for use on a Sherline. The rated torque from these motors is twice that of the commonly suggested rating for a Taig CNC machine. You should probably stick with the 269's for a Taig type machine as well.

I found this on http://www.xylotex.com/425ozin.htm I am not familiar with the company, but I have seen the name around before. The 269 route looks like my best option.

The kit they offer has 135oz motors. Since the 23 is factory I was thinking about purchasing a Nema23 425 oz. I did purchase a 48 volt 7.3A 350 Watt power supply. From what I found this power supply can run 4 stepper motors at 3.5 amps.

Rob

The hobbyist CNC realm of the internet is chock full of the 'bigger stepper
are better' mentality. The problem is that is seldom the case. The stepper
motors need to be matched with the job at hand (machine), stepper drive, and
power supply. For a Sherline/Taig with the stock 20TPI lead screws a smaller
stepper performs MUCH better and are less expensive. A smaller motor not
only has less rotating mass it also generally has lower inductance.

For a Sherline with the stock screw a bipolar motor in the 170oz-in range is
the perfect fit. Take a look at:
                                http://www.soigeneris.com/stepper_motors-details.aspx (my website). If you
want to see how these motors can perform take a look at:
                                http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYn9lCgZPEw (250IPM on a Taig, note this
speed is not practical, it was done to illustrate the limits.) I keep mine
                                tuned to about 90IPM.

The stepper drives are as important as the motor. For these smaller machines
the G540 is hard to beat.

I think I was getting ahead of myself after I looked around some more. I
found a site mentioning: The 425's are more powerful than what a Sherline
CNC machine requires, and are not recommended for use on a Sherline. The
rated torque from these motors is twice that of the commonly suggested
rating for a Taig CNC machine. You should probably stick with the 269's for
a Taig type machine as well.

I found this on http://www.xylotex.com/425ozin.htm I am not familiar with
the company, but I have seen the name around before. The 269 route looks
                                like my best option.

Great information on the stepper motors. After watching the video the 170oz motors will do just fine. Would anyone know where I can get a new table for my sherline? This machine came from a tech school and it does have some drill marks in it.

There are many Sherline dealers around (like myself) who can set you up with the parts you need, you can also get one directly from Sherline. It is not

the parts you need, you can also get one directly from Sherline. It is not
uncommon for a mills bed to acquire some scars over the years. If the bed is
still usable, but you want to improve it cosmetically, or so that a small
drill divot does not cause other problems you might consider just cleaning
the table and filling the spots with a high strength epoxy, like JB Weld. A
bit of time spent filling the holes and sanding them smooth should yield
very good results at a much lower cost. You can always use use a Sharpie
marker to color the filled spots to help them blend in visually.

Should I follow that for wiring up the new machine? If anyone has any pictures of their set up I wouldn't mind taking a look :). Also, what kind of wire should I use for everything?

                                              Alex and group,

I wired my G540 exactly as per the Gecko documentation, back in 2008. And it has never ever hiccuped since.
Re wiring, I purchased my wire in all the different colours from an Auto spares outlet. The wire gauge I don't know but it is what they use for wiring trailers for hooking up to your car. And I have the added plus in that I can colour code just about everything except what I had for breakfast. :-))
