Prop Size for 40HP
- What prop sizes on what motors are people running on 40 HP motors?
What works well with the 19? Especially with a Johnson?
On my last launch last fall I had the motor down and hit a rebar
under water. Bent the prop and broke a small piece off my skeg on my
1993 40HP Johnson. Prop repair runs about $50 but I hear they are
never as good as new. I'm looking at a new Aluminum prop for $99-
115, a Piranha w/ replaceable blades, a West maring Poly.... with
variable pitch replaceable blades. Today at BoatUS I came across 2
Stainless Steel Props for $160 ea. in the clearance section. The SS
props are 11.75X15. My old prop was 12.5X13. I'm wondering if the
saller diameter compensates enough for the increased pitch to work
well with a Mac 19.
I'm aware that lower pitch is better for heavier boats and faster
acceleration / water skiier hauling while higher pitch is better for
higher top speed. I don't think I can try the SS prop and bring it
back - for one thing I have to do a carb job and other boat work
won't be ready until June but the props are in the bin now. The
staff and Michigan say they will fit my motor. Very tempting.
Will it work well with the Mac unbalasted and give me enough umph to
empty the tank?
Will it work at 1/2 (2000-2500) RPM? That is all I can get out of
the motor right now. It reves up to high speed when I twist the
throttle but dies back after 3-6 seconds, just as the boat starts
planing nicely. That is why I'm headed for the carb rebuild when the
factory manual comes in.
