      I'm not THAT old...;) It was later announced that it was a very high altitude balloon test that had reached 155,000 feet. It changed direction because the balloon burst. It disappeared because the sun set on it as it fell (and less cross section). This was a couple of hours after sunset local time so "sunset" for the balloon was a couple of hours later than ground based observers. It was in the Summer and the balloon was well north of us.

      I remember when I was a kid (about the time of the supernova balloon issue) when I noticed an "extra star" in the Big Dipper. It was moving VERY slowly and then changed direction. A few seconds later it disappeared. I didn't think too much of it until I saw it in the paper the next day.
