      If the only issue was plugging a 240-to-12v converter into a 120v wall socket,
      probably all that happened is that the telescope was "starved" for voltage
      (the converter either put out 6v, or gave up entirely).

      That said, the *early* (pre 2002?) 497 Autostars were not well-protected for low voltage operation.
      They could, indeed, lose their deep parameter settings if booted with too low a voltage.
      (Meade changed the "reset" pin's circuitry in later redesigns).

      Do the LEDs behind the keys light up?
      What happens if you press both the ENTER and Scroll Down keys while turning on the power?
      (if you are lucky, it may go to the FlashLoad screen)
