          Hello LVAF Subscribers

The Year of the Artist (June 2000 to May
2001) was a national project that
embraced all artforms. It aimed to
          celebrate living artists and promote
          greater awareness, through residencies
and commissions, of the artist's role and
          status in society.
The Year of the Artist was the single
biggest promotional campaign ever to be
mounted with the individual artist as the
focus. Yorkshire Arts supported over 220
          artists through its research and
          development and residency
          programmes; organised a critical debate
series, including three seminars and an
          international conference; initiated an
          artists' mentoring programme and
mounted a press and media campaign
that included a year long partnership with
          Yorkshire Television.

          Legacy
Yorkshire Arts is determined to ensure
that the legacy created by the Year of the
          Artist is consolidated and further
          developed. This process has already
begun with the radical restructure of its
          Development Programmes in order to
          provide far greater opportunities for
          individual artists.
We will continue to have a commitment
to providing a platform for critical debate
          and further seminars and conferences
are being planned for the future.
Advocacy for the arts in general, and
the artist in particular, will be a key
area of our work. If you would
like to read any of the
reports produced as part of the Year of
the Artist you can access them on the
