Subject: Venus' Flytrap Poachings at Alderman Elementary
The recent Venus’ flytrap poaching at Alderman Elementary School has angered many people in our community. Sadly, poaching of this plant has continued since the large-scale poaching event reported by the media. If you’re upset by this crime and want to do something about it, please read the attached letter from Melanie Doyle, Conservation Horticulturalist at NC Aquarium, Ft. Fisher, and consider writing emails/letters to the NC PCP and your state legislators.
Two major issues concerning the flytraps need to be addressed:
1. The Venus flytrap is listed as a “species of special concern, vulnerable” in the State of North Carolina, not threatened or endangered. Attempts by environmental advocacy groups to get the status of this plant raised (to threatened or endangered) in NC have been unsuccessful as of yet.
2. The penalties for poaching this plant are minimal and do not afford this plant much protection under the law. Existing statutes must be changed to increase the penalties associated with poaching of this plant.
In addition to the actions suggested in the attached letter—and even more timely—would be to write a letter/email to Alan Weakley, the Chair of the Science Committee of the Plant Conservation Program (PCP) Board. The PCP Board looks to the Science Committee for recommendations on status changes. They meet this Thursday, June 27! And in addition to the Science Committee chair and David Welch, PCP Adminstrator, letters should go to the PCP Board Chair.
Their contact information is below:
