The club had a real good time camping at Hanging
Rock State Park and paddling the Dan River. Some
members went up on Thursday and paddled part of Section 5
down to Danbury, NC and on Friday, members and guest
paddled Section 3 near Francisco, NC. The official club
trip was led by Bob Roberson on Saturday, 7 Oct on
Section 5, with the following 16 members and 13 guests
participating: Bob Roberston leader, Jim, Mia & Erin McDermott,
Don & Sandy Meece, Katie & Ed McKendry, Sue & Larry
Yarger, Renate Schuchardt, Craig Smith, Charles West, Liz
& Mike Britt, and Diane Smith. Guests on this float
were Channing Stone, Denny & Barb Meece, Kathryn
Lochra, Rett Saslow, Hank & Barbara Bethea, Jim Curtis,
Robyn VanderGalein, Marilyn Agney, Jack Imbriani, Lynne
Huston, and one other person whose name is illegible on
the sign up form. Other members that camped and/or
paddled on the other days was Bob's wife Frances
Roberson, Bob Guckel, Rudolph & Betty Floyd and family
members of guest Channing Stone. Water level on Section 3
was very low (1.3 at Francisco)which was a bumpy
ride, almost a hike. The levels at Section 5 were great
as releases were made at the hydroelectric dam in
Virginia. Wildlife seen were hawks, blue herons, a snake,
kingfishers, and plenty of hornet nest. Turkeys and raccoons
were seen near the campgound with the raccoons having
a midnight drum fest on the trashcan lids. The
weekend was beautiful with a slight chill in the air on
Saturday night and a little bit of sleet on Sunday
morning. Despite the chill and sleet, it still beats the
      best day working.
